The circle of fifths arranges the twelve major keys around a clock face so that each clockwise step moves up a perfect fifth: C at twelve o’clock, then G, D, A, E, B, F♯, and around through the flat keys D♭, A♭, E♭, B♭, F, and back to C. It is the single most useful diagram in music theory because three different relationships line up on it at once: key signatures, relative minors, and the chord movements that make progressions sound inevitable.
A perfect fifth is seven half steps — the interval from C up to G. Start at C major (no sharps or flats) and move up a fifth to G major: its scale needs exactly one new accidental, F♯. Up another fifth to D major adds C♯, and so on — every clockwise step adds one sharp. Go the other way and every counterclockwise step from C adds one flat: F major has B♭, B♭ major has B♭ and E♭, and so on. The new accidentals themselves arrive in fifths (F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯, A♯, E♯, B♯), which is why the order of sharps in a key signature is itself a slice of the circle.
At the bottom of the circle the two directions meet: F♯ major (six sharps) and G♭ major (six flats) are enharmonic — different spellings of the same-sounding key.
Because each step adds one accidental, a key’s position is its signature: three steps clockwise from C is A major, so A major has three sharps; two steps counterclockwise is B♭ major, so B♭ major has two flats. Most drawings of the circle show a second, inner ring of minor keys. Each minor key sits inside the major key whose signature it shares — its relative major, a minor third above it. A minor sits inside C major (both empty), E minor inside G major (one sharp), B♭ minor inside D♭ major (five flats). The inner ring obeys the same rule as the outer: clockwise is up a fifth, one sharp more.

The circle is not just a filing system for signatures — it is a map of harmonic gravity. Chords whose roots are a fifth apart connect more smoothly than any others, and Western harmony leans on that constantly:

The circle of fifths is a diagram that arranges the 12 keys around a circle by perfect fifths. Moving clockwise adds one sharp at each step; moving counterclockwise adds one flat. It maps how key signatures, relative minors, and closely related keys connect.
Use it to read off a key's signature, find its relative minor (the inner ring), spot closely related keys (immediate neighbours), and build progressions — the I, IV and V chords of any key sit next to each other on the circle.
Go clockwise from the top: C G D A E B F-sharp, then the flat side D-flat A-flat E-flat B-flat F back to C. Each clockwise step adds a sharp; a mnemonic like "Cows Go Down And Eat" fixes the sharp order.
Each clockwise step moves up a perfect fifth (C to G to D…). After twelve fifths you arrive back where you started, so the sequence closes into a circle.
They are the same circle read in opposite directions. Clockwise is fifths (adding sharps); counterclockwise is fourths (adding flats). Reading one direction for fifths and the other for fourths is why the diagram works for both.
